Travel Guide: Piha Beach

Updated: Jan 13, 2023

One thing my readers have been requesting lately has been to share more of my adventures and travels, especially around New Zealand. So here we are...the first piece of my travel guides.

The West Coast is a beautiful place, there are many different beaches, walking tracks, and even waterfalls! I took my parents out there on the weekend to get them out of their comfort zones and to venture somewhere they had never been before.

From central Auckland to Piha Beach it takes around 1 hour 30 minutes, you will reach the Waitakere Ranges and from there you are completely rural. The greenery and farmland are gorgeous and the road to get down to Piha gives you full 180-degree views of the coast.

Tasman Lookout is something I have been wanting to see for a while at Piha Beach. It was a little confusing when first arriving, but with a little google search, it was very easy to find. Walking to the end of the carpark to the left there are track signs and a stairway along the cliff edge, it's about a 10-minute walk up to the main lookout.

As you can see...the view is beautiful. The waves rolling in from afar, the coastline towards the North, the surfers catching waves were blissful.

We headed back a couple 100m from the lookout and found a track that vares to the left. This was the walking track out to The Blue Pools and Taitomo Rock. We hadn't realised at the time where the track led to, but I fully regretted not bringing my bikini along because the water was so inviting.

On low tide, you would be able to easily walk back to Piha main beach through the coves but you would have to be careful at high tide as the water meets between the two coves behind Taitomo Rock.

I Recommend adventuring out to Piha Beach whether it be during summer or even winter, the views are stunning and the different swimming spots are epic.
