How to make Pom Poms
Updated: Oct 2, 2023
I have been working on a project for over a month using Pom Poms. I tried hand making them in every way you can think of and came to a functional solution towards the best process.
I used the cardboard method (Kind of had a meltdown), the fork method, and wrapping the hand which worked but wasn't effective. After all this, I invested in Pom Pom makers from The Warehouse ($9 for x3 sizes!) and I can't lie this changed the game.
The process of making Pom Poms is very therapeutic, I make them while chilling on the couch watching a movie and can easily pump out a roll of yarn each night.
You can use Pom Poms in any way you want, I am currently using them for accessories and will be creating garlands and wreaths for future projects. They are also a fun way to modernise crafts rather than your standard paper decorations. They are also the perfect toy for cats...
Here is a step-by-step on how to create Pom Poms and if you do make them, tag @ageoflaice as would love to see your designs, Happy creating!
TOOLS YOU WILL NEED:
You will need a pair of scissors, your Pom Pom makers (In my case I had three sizes) and your coloured yarn of choice (Spotlight is the perfect place for all things crafts).
STEP 1
Open both halves of Pom Pom maker, keeping both arms together on each side.
STEP 2
Holding end of yarn in place, start wrapping around both arms on one half of Pom Pom maker.
STEP 3
Continue wrapping until you have several layers of yarn. More yarn will result in a thicker Pom Pom.
STEP 4
Close wrapped half of Pom Pom maker. Cut spooling end of yarn.
STEP 5
Repeat STEPS 2 - 4 on other half of Pom Pom maker.
STEP 6
Cut yarn in between arms of Pom Pom maker. Continue cutting around the entire perimeter.
STEP 7
Thread Piece of yarn through arms of Pom Pom maker. Tie a knot (I would recommend tying this 3 times to make it extra tight to hold the Pom Pom together).
STEP 8
Open both halves of Pom Pom maker.
STEP 9
Pull Pom Pom maker a apart and remove Pom Pom.
STEP 10
Fluff and trim your finished Pom Pom!
